Trick or Treat

Posted by Susan on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in ,
I just love this roller stamp from Stampin' Up. I haven't used him in a few years, but this year I decided to dig him out and polish him off for a new Halloween Card.

I had seen other cards using this stamp and they highlighted in white the little treaters, so I did the same and I liked the way it turned out :D  Happy Halloween.

Trying a new size

Posted by Susan on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in ,
I had bought some square envelopes (6x6) and decided to try some square cards. I didn't realize how *large* 6x6 cards would turn out :D  I think I'll try 5x5 in the future and just leave envelope room, cause these seem so big in comparison to my standard 4x6.

Again, I used the Apothecary Emporium stack from Echo Park, including some of the sticker and cut out pieces that came with the kit.

Pretty simple and quick to produce if you don't mind lots of cutting, and again, it uses up more paper from a stack I had been hoarding for a while! Three cheers for using paper!

A tri-fold card

Posted by Susan on Friday, October 18, 2013 in ,
I've always wanted to try a tri-fold card, and although I didn't have a problem with the cutting, scoring and shaping.....boy, decorating a tri-fold card is a challenge.  You have to take all the folds into consideration, what papers will show next to what, where you will put your sentiment and, if you want to write a note. I used the Apothecary Emporium pack from Echo Park for this one and I like the way it turned out, but I don't know if I'll be making a lot of them in the future!

An exercise in minimalism

Posted by Susan on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in ,
Whenever someone new to scrapbooking asks me what to buy if they want to make some Christmas cards here is my list:

Good scissors
Paper Cutter/Trimmer
Tape runner/adhesive of some kind
One paper stack with paper you like and preferably some pages with cut outs (tags, pennants, sayings, etc.)
Corresponding cardstock

Really, you can create some beautiful cards JUST with paper. Here are a few I created for Halloween. The card is created entirely with the Haunted Mansion paper pack from Recollections (and a spool of 1.50 ribbon from the Michaels Halloween ribbon bin).

On this second version I added the use of a Martha Stewart spider punch, but a strip of coloured cardstock would serve just as well if you didn't have a punch.

I'm a notorious paper hoarder, and so finally biting the bullet and really jumping into a paper pack and using it up feels good. Don't be afraid to cut that paper!

Bite Me!

Posted by Susan on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 in ,
Every year I do a character card for one particular friend who seems to really enjoy them. This years version is a vampire. Now as with previous years, I did not design this myself - it is a variation on a design posted to scrapbook.com (and unfortunately my gallery didn't save it correctly so I can't re-locate the original artist, but if I do I will amend the info here).

Here's is my version.

Danse Macabre

Posted by Susan on Monday, October 14, 2013 in , ,
The first Halloween card of the season and I really wanted to try this new background stamp I bought at Michaels from Stampendous.com.

I started by stamping the background with Versafine in Onyx on white cardstock. Then I covered him over with Sookwang double-sided tape and put a layer of Glitter Ritz warm highlight over it, so that it sparkles with orange and green flecks (better seen in person for sure).

Then I used a Spellbinders label die and some Halloween ribbon bought at Michaels to accent the bottom of the card. I topped it off with a metal charm from Jolee's Boutique for EK Success and voila!

I like how it turned out, although it wasn't originally what I envisioned when I started the project, and I still don't know if I like it as much as the Pumpkin/Crow cards I did from previous years. This stamp however, is just too cool not to use!

Fall on display

Posted by Susan on Saturday, October 12, 2013 in ,
I love this time of year. I love the colours, the temperature, the crispness in the air. I love all the harvest decorations and of course Halloween. AND......as a scrapbooker, I love the fall papers that seem to come out at this time of year.

I headed to Michaels to pick up their large wooden letters for a Fall decor project. They were a little more expensive than I would have liked, so I saved up my coupons and extra percentages off and bought them when they were on sale. Then I dove into the DCWV Autumn Melody stack and using some decoupage medium, covered them with the beautiful fall papers.

I added a few embellishments, which ended up being the hardest part of the whole project - trying to balance out the decorative bits. In the end I went minimal and just added a few.

It was a fun project to do that really didn't take a lot of time and hopefully I'll be able to pack it away for use for a few more years anyway!

Look for Halloween cards and decorations coming up next!

More Fall Flora and Fauna

Posted by Susan on Saturday, October 05, 2013 in
So excited about how my first floral arrangement turned out, I decided to tackle another, slightly larger one. This time I had a spot to fill. My mudroom entryway needed a little colour. The small accent table was small and low so I wanted to try and build an arrangement with some height.

Here is what I came up with (click to enlarge):

Flowers of Fall

Posted by Susan on Tuesday, October 01, 2013 in
I got the urge to create a flower arrangement with all the fall colours I love so much. I headed to the dollar store to see what kind of artificial flowers I could scrounge for my project and sure enough, they had a selection I could work with and that was way better priced than Michaels.

Here is the finished project, now proudly on display in my front door entryway (click for a larger view).
